Complicated, But Well-Made
"This is a rather complicated but very well-made leg brace. It comes with a lot of parts and because it is a serious medical device, attention should be given to the instructions. First of all, it either comes as a brace for the right leg or the left. Mine is specifically for the right and cannot be switched for the other leg. The flexion sliders along with the Velcro straps and the adjustable dial with 13 positions for securing over the knee and the upper thigh areas all do a good job of limiting movement. Further adjustments are made with a hex key or screwdriver (both included) for tightening the buckle to keep the entire brace in alignment. It's also well padded, lightweight, and comfortable and allows for normal walking. I hardly felt it on my leg! This is a sophisticated brace and although it comes with directions, the best thing would be to watch the videos on the Amazon page. If that is still too complicated, then certainly have a medical professional help you adjust it properly. However its put on, its a very helpful way of stabilizing the leg and preventing more injuries to it."

Outstanding For Old Knee Injuries
"I ordered this because several years ago I tore two ligaments and damaged the cartilage in my left knee. The initial injury healed well, but I have since developed arthritis in that joint. It doesn't flare often, but an unloader brace was recommended to me by a PT friend, and this particular model has been receiving some buzz (there are videos out there). The first thing I noticed was the fit: you basically conform it to your needs by adjusting the velcro straps just once, as they can be set to that size from that point on. While the brace is side-specific (the left leg brace cannot be made to work on the right leg), it CAN be adjusted to unload pressure on either the right or left side of the knee. It comes with everything needed in the way of tools to properly set the brace to your needs, including locking in the degree of flexion desired. I found it surprisingly easy and intuitive to set up, and the brace seems to be of good quality. It is as comfortable to wear as any device of this sort can possibly be, and it has definitely helped to alleviate inflammation and pain. The price is more than fair for what you receive."

With Patience and Insight, a High Degree of Performance Can Be Realized.
"To be sure, anyone with the notion that theyre going to slap the Orthomen Knee Brace on their leg, pull the straps to fit, and that it will then relieve pain is a user likely to be disappointed. Getting the best performance from the brace is a proactive endeavor undertaken with a clear understanding of the orthopedic condition or injury to be relieved. If the brace is not adjusted properly and with care, a condition and corresponding pain could be exacerbated. The Orthomen brace is a medical device. If the user is under the care of a doctor or physical therapist, take advantage of their assistance in adjusting the brace properly; to that end, its highly adjustable. Everyones body, and the nature of any injury to its knee, is unique, so that fitting the brace to best advantage takes patience and physical awareness. Of course, the basic principle of the Unloader Knee Brace is to relieve the load of an irritant force against an injury or degenerative condition, thereby relieving the associated pain. Think of two surfaces touching or rubbing against each other, with the brace used to lift, push or pull the surfaces away from one another to reduce or eliminate the contact. The Orthomen brace allows forces to be reduced in all three axes, that is, it can lift, push or pull according to the users unique needs. Four adjustable straps, each with ample padding for optimal comfort, are used to hold the brace on the leg; two above the knee and two below. The brace incorporates a hinge parallel to the users knee joint. The hinge can be adjusted to decrease the knees extension and/or flexion, as well as applying force inward or outward. A built-in knob is used for conveniently applying an inward force to knee or pulling it outward. For limiting the extension and or flexion of the knee, a set of small chocks are included. By loosening two screws that sit atop the hinge, the desired chocks can be slipped into the underlying gearing, one on the inside and another on the outside. Two separate sets of chocks are included, one for the flexion adjustment and the other for extension. The sets are delivered in separate marked bags, and are also coded with different notches on plates themselves. Each chock is marked with a degree of arc for reference, for example 30, 45 and so on. The four straps are secured with buckles, so that once fitted, the be brace can be removed and placed back on without further adjustment. The basic fit of the brace is done while sitting with the knees flexion at around 90. Theres a specific order in which the straps are to be attached and fitted, and this is enumerated on the straps themselves. The seller provides instructions of how to best fit the straps, and on how to make use of the various adjustments. Essentially, which is the approach I took, following the sellers instructions, is to make the basic fitting of the brace to the leg using the straps, then walk and stand with it, making necessary adjustments as needed until its comfortable and secure. Then, depending on whether the area of interest is radial or medial, use the built-in knob at the joint to adjust the sideways pressure of the outside knee pad. Finally, if either extension, flexion or both needs to be reduced, insert the appropriate chocks into the hinge gears by loosening the two screws. After each of these adjustments is made it should be tested, readjusted as necessary, and tested again. Its an incremental process, but with patience, and assuming the Orthomen brace is appropriate brace to begin with, it can be adjusted to optimal support and pain relief performance. In my case, I have a torn meniscus on the inside of my knee, so I get relief by turning the adjustment knob counter-clockwise, pushing the knee slightly inwards, taking pressure off of the tear. My goal with the brace is to be able to finish out the winter season of my softball league, after which Ill consider surgery. My injury is more painful on somedays than others, nonetheless, I am able to run with the brace in place. When delivered, chocks are in place that allow for full extension and flexion, which is the way Ive left them. The brace has provided me with realized relief. Care of the brace is fairly simple. All of the straps, padding, and liners are removable and hand washing is suggested. It is further suggested that a dry lubricant be applied occasionally to the hinge. The brace is supplied with two extra buckles, an extra strap to fit larger legs, the two sets of hinge chocks, the small screwdriver necessary to remove and insert the chocks, extra hook and loop adhesive dots and clear instructions on how to fit and adjust the brace. Overall, my impression is of an insightfully designed and built medical device that if adjusted properly will, provide the benefits asserted by the seller."
